The Whispering Dark creators reimagines World War II with The Secret Land

Interesting news from Dark Horse Comics…

Coming soon, from writer Christofer Emgård and artist Tomás Aira, the creative team duo behind The Whispering Dark, return to Dark Horse comics with a new, upcoming cosmic horror mini-series and fictionalized reimagining of World War II in The Secret Land.

It is 1945, and Hitler is dead. Ben and Katherine are supposed to be together, happy. Instead, Ben fights the war in the Pacific with reckless heroism, believing his fiancée to be dead. However, Katherine lives, undercover aboard a German submarine.

As Ben tries to move on, the US Navy receives a message. The Nazis are plotting their return, powered by strange and foreboding technology in Antarctica. When Ben learns Katherine is there, he knows he must go too.

As war engulfs the edge of the world, Ben and Katherine confront the truth about the boundaries of love, and what lies beyond them.

“Ever since The Whispering Dark I’ve been looking to reprise my collaboration with Tomás, and The Secret Land finally provided the perfect opportunity. This mini-series began life as a pulpy horror tale (it does have both Nazis and tentacles in it…), but at its core it’s really a story about commitment, longing and loss. I feel Tomás has conveyed this beautifully through his evocative art and I hope the readers out there will feel the same.” said Christofer Emgård in a recent press release from Dark Horse Comics.

“Chris’ amazing script hooked me from day one and I was eager to flesh out these characters and continue building this terrifying world. Bringing the Otherlands to life has a strange fascination for me, and often I find myself fearful of the very monsters I’m painting, while adorning their abominable visage with teeth-covered appendices. There’s probably no better place to set up the darkest monsters than in WW2 but this time, humanity has upped the game, I’m rooting for them as I draw them! “ adds Tomás Aira.

The Secret Land #1 (of four) arrives June 9, 2021, at the comic stores everywhere. Emgård and Aira’s previous miniseries, The Whispering Dark is available now in collected trade paperback for $17.99.

Skyward’s Joe Henderson and Lee Garbett return in 2021 for Shadecraft horror series

Image Comics recently announced a new upcoming teen horror series, Shadecraft, with writer and Lucifer showrunner Joe Henderson teaming up with Captain Marvel artist Lee Garbett to bring some scary freshness for 2021. The creative duo was recently known for the Eisner nominated and awesome series (and personal favorite) Skyward, which ended in 2019. Now, on to something new…

In Shadecraft, readers meet Zadie Lu. She’s afraid of her own shadow. She’s also a teenager, so she really should have grown out of it by now… But something weird is happening in her small town—it’s as if the shadows are actually coming to life. Watching her. Maybe even trying to kill her. But how do you fight something you can’t even touch? And why is she the target they’re after?

“To me, shadows are the perfect mixture of horror and fun. One minute, they seem to come to dangerous life out of the corner of my eye. The next, I’m making silly shadow puppets with my son,” Henderson told Comic Book Resources in an exclusive scoop of the announcement. “I love that cocktail of genuine scares and playful adventure, and we’ve infused it into this book. I’ve been wanting to tell a story with shadows coming to life for years, but it took finding the right emotional heart—finding Zadie’s story—for it to finally come together. Welcome to Shadecraft—let’s hope Zadie Lu survives the experience…”

Garbett also told Comic Book Resources: “With Shadecraft we get to play with a darker, more ominous tone than Skyward without losing that vital heart and warmth that’s so important to us. This book presented a whole new set of artistic challenges in bringing the shadows to life. I tried to keep things as organic as possible, letting the ink move and grow on the paper to find its own form. I can’t wait for everyone to check it out.”

Shadecraft #1 will be available at comic book shops, and also across digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, ComiXology, and Google Play, on Wednesday, March 31

Home Sick Pilots adds new punks and horror to comic stores this Fall

Recently announced by Image Comics, Home Sick Pilots, a new ongoing horror comic from bestselling writer Dan Watters (Coffin Bound, Lucifer) and artist Caspar Wijngaard (Star Wars, Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt) is set for launch this December.

In Home Sick Pilots, in the summer of 1994, a haunted house walks across California. Inside is Ami, lead singer of a high school punk band—who’s been missing for weeks. How did she get there, and what do these ghosts want? Expect three-chord songs and big bloody action that’s Power Rangers meets The Shining (!!).

Home Sick Pilots mars the reunification of writer/artist team of Watters and Wijngaard since their work debut at Image with their critically acclaimed, day-glo drenched miniseries Limbo, back in 2015.

“They say write what you know—well what I know is a teenage hellscape filled with pitfalls and secret etiquettes and beautiful broken people,” Watters told The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive feature. “We’re about to send the Home Sick Pilots—the power trio of Ami, Buzz and Rip—out of that same hellscape into another, and hope that they survive.”

“We’ve all had at least one unforgettable summer as teens, late nights, parties, gigs, stolen booze, heartbreak and most importantly friendships. Except in this instance the teens are causing chaos in ectoplasmic power suits whilst haunted houses are fist fighting on the horizon,” added Wijngaard in the THR piece.

Home Sick Pilots #1 will be available at comic book shops, and online via popular and direct digital comic apps on Wednesday, December 9.

Here’s a sweet four-page preview in the meantime, with a huge special thanks to Image Comics!

The Walking Dead comics rises again for a new “Deluxe” color series release

The original Walking Dead comic series is coming back to comic stores as the Walking Dead: Deluxe revival, with more for fans new and old to take, to really appreciate the original work by Robert Kirkman. All issues will remixed in color, with extras and new variant covers, and set for October release from Skybound Entertainment via Image Comics.

Each new Walking Dead: Deluxe issue will be newly, fully colored issues, instead of the original black and white presentations. The coloring will be done by Canadian artist Dave McCaig, who work spans comics and animation for over two decades. Creator Robert Kirkman recently announced the fully colored issues during Skybound Xpo, Skybound’s virtual pop-culture convention.

This deluxe revival of the series will have variant covers—by such artists as David Finch, Tony Moore, Julian Totino Tedesco, and Arthur Adams—commemorating major character introductions and the series’ most memorable twists and turns. Each issue will include a new installment of “The Cutting Room Floor,” featuring Kirkman’s original handwritten plots along with commentary on abandoned storylines and plot points that may have changed along the way.

This definitive presentation of the story will NOT be collected into trade paperback any time soon, so fans and new readers should not trade-wait to experience this fully colored edition of the popular survival horror series. Issue #1 will be available on October 7. Each following month two issues will be released.

Here’s a little preview of the colored pages for the first issue of Walking Dead: Deluxe..

Comics Writer/Artist Nick Roche unleashes a new terror to parenting with Scarenthood

While the Kids are at Preschool, the Ghost Hunting Begins

That’s what will happen on comic shelves with a fresh and upcoming, creepy four-issue comic book series, Scarenthood, coming this Halloween for 2020. The art and writing is by Nick Roche (Transformers: The Wreckers Saga), with coloring by Chris O’Halloran (Immortal Hulk). IDW will publish with a plan to debut in October.

With their kids away on a field trip, a group of parents disturbs an ancient evil buried beneath the old Church Hall, unearthing a decades-old mystery about a missing child, and inviting something… hungry into their lives. Suddenly, their mornings go from playdates and peanut allergies to a battle for the souls of one broken family — and one child in particular.

“My generation grew up in what seemed like a haunted Ireland: superstition still abounded, and everyone had seen moving holy statues, or lived near a stately home that had been burnt to the ground in a Satanic visitation, or knew someone who chopped down a Faerie bush and lived to regret it,” says Roche in a recent press release. “Scarenthood is about realizing that some of those horrors from childhood are real, but nothing is more terrifying than ruining your own kid’s life. Also: there are funny bits.”

“I’m incredibly happy to be coloring Scarenthood,” says O’Halloran. “I’ve been an admirer of Nick’s work for a long time and working on a story set so close to home is a bit of rarity. The spookier elements are such fun to work on and getting those moments to hit right each time is a treat, but it’s the incredible character work by Nick, both as a writer and artist, that’s making this such a special project for me.”

“Through every project Nick Roche has done at IDW — Transformers, Monster Motors, and his cover work — he has brought an enthusiasm and viewpoint that greatly enriches the work,” says editor David Mariotte. “Having him and Chris O’Halloran bring Scarenthood to life (or afterlife as the case may be) here has been phenomenally exciting. They’re telling a story close to their hearts, which elevates the humor, the scares, and the quiet moments in an authentic and beautiful way.”

Scarenthood #1 will be available with two cover variations for retailers and fans to enjoy: Cover A by Nick Roche, and a Retailer Incentive edition by Declan Shalvey (Moon Knight).

Chip Zdarsky and Ramón K Pérez brings Stillwater, a new horror series to comic shelves

Image Comics with Skybound Entertainment recently announced Stillwater, new comics work from New York Times bestselling, Eisner Award-winning writer Chip Zdarsky (The White Trees, Daredevil, Sex Criminals) and Eisner, Harvey, and Shuster Award-winning artist Ramón K Pérez (Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand, Jane). Stillwater will be a new ongoing series that promises a dive into a new world of horror and intrigue.

There is little known about the story, except for this hook:

In the town of Stillwater, nobody dies. That’s not just a promise. It’s a threat.

There’s also a 3-page preview below!

“I’m thrilled people are finally going to see Stillwater! This idea’s been percolating in my for years now, and it’s been fun working with Ramon to build this tiny, strange world! I’ve always wanted to write a horror comic so I can show the world that I’m not JUST creepy, I can also write creepy!” said Zdarsky in a recent press release. “I love getting to explore immortality on a small stage, the idea that you can live forever but just within such a constrained space. It’s been a treat getting to write characters struggling with that terrifying deal.”

Pérez added: “It’s been a joy to step away from the superhero genre and delve into the horror, thriller, and a dash of mystery genre with Chip on Stillwater! I hope readers are as unsettled as I was drawing the book…”

Stillwater #1 will be available at comic book shops and popular digital comics apps on Wednesday, September 16.

This spring, IDW brings deep water horror in a Sea of Sorrows to comic readers

IDW Publishing recently announced a new series by the creative team of writer Rich Douek and artist Alex Cormack (best known for their hit Road of Bones) as they reunite to bring readers a deep sea adventure with a horrific twist: the five-issue Sea of Sorrows!

In the aftermath of the Great War, the North Atlantic is ripe for plunder by independent salvage crews. When a former naval officer hires the SS Vagabond, he leads the ship to a sunken U-boat, and a fortune in gold. Tensions mount as the crew prepares to double cross each other, but the darkness of the ocean floor holds deeper terrors than any of them have bargained for!

“Alex and I are excited to put the same twisted imaginations that brought you Road of Bones to work on new places, new characters, and of course, new heights of unspeakable terror,” said Douek in a recent press release. “Get ready for another dark journey into the horrors that lurk within the pages of history!”

“The ocean is a terrifying and mysterious place,” says Cormack. “Sea of Sorrows reveals the isolation and horror of being in an alien world on our own planet, facing threats that should be impossible, chasing you through an inescapable setting. With the character designs and especially the story, this would be a book I’d draw just for myself. Rich is a talented writer and great collaborator. I’m happy to be along for the ride!”

Sea of Sorrows #1 will be available with coming May with cover art by Alex Cormack, plus a Retailer Incentive variant edition by Katie Sawatsky. Check your favorite comic book store for availability and preorder.

Mirka Andolfo’s MERCY Italian comic horror series is set for 2020 US release, 3-page preview here

unnamed (13)

Italian comics writer/illustrator/creator Mirka Andolfo (Unnatural, Unsacred, DC Bombshells)  will release her new gothic horror comic miniseries, Mercy, for the US this March 2020, from Image Comics.

Andolfo presents a darker story that addresses issues far beyond typical genre-related tropes. Mercy explores topics of “otherness,” damnation, redemption, and what it means to be a monster.

Mirka Andolfo’s Mercy begins when the placid mining village of Woodsburgh is disturbed by a series of brutal murders, sending the settlement into turmoil. As the first snow covers the chaos in a white blanket, a mysterious woman in black arrives, eliciting a totally different kind of unrest. But who is Lady Hellaine, really? And what’s her secret agenda?

Image Comics recently released a preview from the forthcoming six-issue miniseries. (3-page preview below!) Mercy was also recently released in Italy by Panini Comics with an established fanbase and bestselling track record.

“I’m so thrilled about the release of Mercy by Image,” said Andolfo in a recent press release from Image Comics. “As with every story I write and draw, there’s a lot of me inside this book, and I hope the American readers will enjoy that, as they did with Unnatural!”

Fans excited for the new series can visit gotmercy.me for bonus Mercy content, exclusive artwork, and supplemental story material.

Mirka Andolfo’s Mercy will release with multiple covers to its first issue with art Mirka Andolfo, Humberto Ramos, Artgerm, Enrico Marini, Marco B. Bucci. This full first issue will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, March 4.
