Psychological horror series REGRESSION, coming soon in trade paperback

This November, Image Comics will release Regression: Volume 1: Way Down Deep by horror writer Cullen Bunn (Harrow County, The Damned), artist Danny Luckert (Haunted), and colorist Marie Enger (Pistolwhip, 2 Sisters) in trade paperback form, collecting issues #1-5 of the mind-bending horror series.

Plagued by ghastly waking nightmares, Adrian reluctantly agrees to past-life regression hypnotherapy. As his consciousness is cast back through time, Adrian witnesses a scene of horrific debauchery and diabolism. Waking, he is more unsettled than before, and with good reason—something has followed him back. Adrian descends into a world of occult conspiracy, mystery, reincarnation, and insanity from which there is no escape.

“My father was a professional hypnotist,” said Bunn. “While his on-stage performances centered around humor, he conducted past life regressions for select groups. I witnessed several of these regressions, and each one was surreal and eerie in its own way. Subjects described different times and places in vivid detail. They spoke with unusual accents. They spoke languages they had never (to our knowledge) studied. The most bizarre occurrences were the regressions which resulted in a completely silent subject.

“To me, it seemed that either they were a genuine ‘new soul,’ or whatever they saw in their past was too horrific to so much as utter,” continued Bunn. “This story is designed to conjure that same sense of unease and horror.”

Regression: Volume 1: Way Down Deep arrives in comic book stores on Wednesday, November 15th, then available in bookstores on Tuesday, November 21st

New fantasy romance comic series Sleepless, coming soon from Image

Image Comics will release Sleepless, a new fantasy romance series by writer Sarah Vaughn (Alex + Ada, Eternal Empire) and artist Leila del Duca (Shutter, Afar), editor/colorist Alissa Sallah, with letterer Deron Bennett, this December.

Lady “Poppy” Pyppenia, daughter of a king, is ever guarded by the devoted Sleepless Knight Cyrenic. But a new king has just been crowned—and danger lurks anew around each and every corner.

Sleepless is a story that is very dear to me, grown from an idea I would play in my head at night as I tried to fall asleep,” said Vaughn. “It’s wonderful to see the book come to life with Leila, Alissa, and Deron. I hope readers enjoy reading about Poppy and Cyrenic and getting a little more romance, costumes, and fantasy in their lives.”

“I’m incredibly thrilled to be drawing a romance comic with Sarah!” said del Duca. “She has written a lush world and intriguing characters that I’m having fun falling in love with (pun intended!). We’re both huge fans of period dramas and romance, so doing our own take on the genre has been very rewarding. I love the palace intrigue, the sexual tension, the dramatic emotions, and the amazing wardrobes in this series.”

“I’m also very pleased to be working with Alissa Sallah and Deron Bennett,” added del Duca. “Alissa both edits and colors the book, giving us invaluable editorial feedback along with turning in gorgeous colors. She uses a lot of flat colors on top of watercolor and ink textures, which stylistically fits perfectly for the tone of the story. Deron has chosen a unique lettering style for our book that also lends a particular moodiness to the book. I can’t wait to share what our team has created!”

Sleepless #1 will have two covers; cover A by Leila del Duca (above) and Alissa Sallah and Cover B by Jen Bartel (below).

“It’s an honor to work on such a fantastic story with Leila and Sarah,” said Sallah. “The world of Sleepless has such a dreamy vibe to it. And so dramatic! This is a story that feels very refreshing right now in comics, and we thank everyone for their support!”

Sleepless #1 arrives in comic book shops on Wednesday, December 6th.

And more previously unveiled…

Paradiso, an all-new dystopian sci-fi series begins this December

Image is set on bringing fresh new mind-bending science fiction tale Paridoso, this December from writer Ram V (Grafity’s Wall, Black Mumba), artist Dev Pramanik (Nightbloom, Black Mumba), colorist Dearbhla Kelly (James Bond: Moneypenny).

The Midnight Event forever changed the world. Now, centuries later, Jack Kryznan arrives on the outskirts of Paradiso City, haunted by fragments of childhood memories and in possession of a mysterious device—one with the power to change the destiny of this living breathing metropolis: the people who dwell within, and the guardians who strive for and against it.

“I’ve always been fascinated by cities,” said Ram V. “They are a reflection of the people within them, and yet they have influence over their citizens. We build them to outlive us, but they are human places, tied in with our understanding of beauty and mortality. Architect and urban designer Rajiv Bhakat and I first conceived the idea of a city trying to understand its place in the world by understanding those who live within it. And, much like a real city, the story has grown and evolved into this crazy, dangerous, romantic, and magical place called Paridoso.”

“I’ve been in love with the desolate, melancholy aesthetic of dystopian landscapes for as long as I can remember,” says Pramanik. “Paridoso was a dream-come-true project for me. Every design and set piece in this comic is something that I’ve put a piece of my soul into. I hope that will resonate with the readers!”

Paridoso has been a labour of love,” said Kelly. “Between its weird and fantastic sci-fi concepts and the lush, textured artwork that I get to paint, I couldn’t be more excited to be involved. We’ve created this strange new world and it’s been so much fun getting to play in it.”

“There are pages in Paridoso that come from a hive-mind of writer/artist/colorist/letterer that any one of us just couldn’t have planned on our own,” added Bidikar. “Paradiso is everything comics should be.”

Paridoso #1 will have two covers; cover A (above) by Dev Pramanik and cover B (below) by Christian Ward. The debut issue arrives in comic book shops Wednesday, December 6th.

Daniel Warren Johnson’s EXTREMITY, sets off new story arc this Fall

Extremity, the acclaimed new comic series from writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson (Space Mullet) and colorist Mike Spicer will kick off a new arc for its dystopian epic, this October from Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment.

In Extremity, an endless cycle of violence has taken an incredible toll on two cultures—and one family in particular. Thea was once a gifted artist, but in the wake of a brutal amputation, she became consumed by a thirst for revenge. In this seventh issue, Thea and her brother Rollo enter the Ancient Dark, where they are hunted by things that dare not live in the light above.

“The second arc is something I’m excited to share with everyone,” said Johnson. “I put a tremendous amount of time into building up the world below that readers haven’t seen yet, so it’ll be refreshing to finally show it off!”

Extremity #7 hits comic shops Wednesday, October 4th. The first volume trade paperback collecting the first arc will be out in September.

CAPTAIN’s NOTE: For those who missed out on the earlier issues, I highly recommend the Extremity: Vol. 1 trade paperback when it comes out!)

New crime/horror adventure GASOLINA coming soon from Image, sneak peek inside

Gasolina will also release with a variant cover by artist Lorenzo De Felici (see preview below).

“Skybound is the most creatively stimulating environment I’ve ever experienced, so in creating this comic with Niko Walter, I’m putting to use everything I’ve learned from all the talented creators I’ve worked with… and also Robert Kirkman,” said Mackiewicz. “I can’t imagine publishing my first comic anywhere but at Image/Skybound.”

Everything burns in this new series where love and devotion can only be measured in fire and blood.

Greg Pak’s hit comic MECH CADET YU, now an ongoing series

Great news is here for those who enjoyed the premiere issue of Mech Cadet Yu. ‘

BOOM! Studios recently announced Mech Cadet Yu, previously planned as a limited series, will carry on as an ongoing series. Its first issue sold out on the week of release at the distributor level (copies may still be available at local comic shops) and received many rave reviews.

The superstar dream team of writer Greg Pak (Hulk, Weapon X) and artist Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms. Marvel, Runaways) reunited to deliver the story of Stanford Yu, a young janitor who is unexpectedly chosen to join the sacred ranks of the mech cadets at Sky Corps Academy. Once a year, giant robots from outer space come to Earth to bond with the cadets to defend the world from terrifying aliens known as the Sharg. After he unintentionally bonds with his robot, Yu is thrown into training, hoping to prove he is worthy of being there at all.

“I’m hugely thrilled and so grateful to all of the readers, reviewers, and retailers who showed the first issue so much love and spread the word about the book,” says Pak. “That kind of word-of-mouth means all the world to an underdog book about an underdog hero and his underdog robot, so thank you so much! None of this would have happened without you, and we’re doing our best to make every issue the best and most fun it can possibly be.”

“I feel like we would just be getting on our two feet with the first four issues, so it’s going to be amazing to see where the story goes and watch Stanford and Co. face bigger threats and become even bigger heroes,” adds Miyazawa. “Stanford has come such a long way already. I hope everyone keeps rooting for the kid!”

“Greg and Takeshi are one the of most exciting pairs of collaborators in comics, creating characters with unmatched charm and heart,” says Cameron Chittock, BOOM! Studios associate editor of MECH CADET YU. “It’s impossible not to root for Stanford and his fellow cadets and with even more story to be told, I cannot wait for fans to see how their relationships evolve as they face worldwide threats together.”

Mech Cadet Yu #2 is scheduled for release on September 13, at comic stores and special digital apps everywhere.
