This Fall season, SMOOTH CRIMINALS will sneak into your comic stores!

BOOM! Studios recently announced Smooth Criminals #1, a new original ongoing series beginning in November 2018 from the acclaimed screenwriter Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith (Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You) and Kurt Lustgarten, the writing duo behind the smash hit Misfit City, and artist Leisha Riddel (Project Solace).

Here is a bit more from a recent news release from BOOM! studios:

There are certain things Brenda expects to find while hacking: money, secrets, occasional pictures of cats. She is NOT expecting to find a cryogenically frozen master thief named Mia from the 60s. Mia is everything Brenda is not—cool, confident, beautiful. And utterly unprepared for the digital age. Despite their differences, the two will need to team up to find out what happened to Mia—and how to pull off the heist of the century.

“With Smooth Criminals, we want to tell a female friendship story wrapped in a jewel heist — a buddy comedy about a somewhat-out-of-touch cat burglar from the past who teams with a socially awkward tech savvy genius in 1999 that shows just how much times – and crimes – have changed,” said Kiwi Smith & Kurt Lustgarten. “We want to explore the idea that women era and different backgrounds can accomplish true change by working together in a world where anachronistic rules are meant to be broken. If you’re fan of James Bond or nostalgic for the 90s, you’ll love seeing these two team up to pull off the the heist of the century…if they can figure out how to be friends first.”

“I’m very excited to work on Smooth Criminals, as someone who identifies as a woman of color, creating characters that are closer to who I am is always great,” said Leisha Riddel. “The story is a bit sci-fi, and a bit action, but still relatable as a coming of age which is a recipe for everything I’m all about. Brenda and Mia are super fun to draw and I can’t wait to draw all their escapades.”

Smooth Criminals #1 will feature its main cover by artist Audrey Mok (Archie, Heroine Chic) and a variant cover by artists Chynna Clugston Flores (Blue Monday, Scooter Girl).

“Sometimes crime really does pay – in the form of finding your new best friend and hopefully getting super rich,” said Shannon Watters, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Readers of Misfit City know that Kiwi and Kurt perfectly marry big thrills and even bigger friendships to create unforgettable adventures. Now they’re going to steal your heart once again with Leisha-Marie as their new partner in crime and we can’t wait for you to see what they’ve got planned.”

Smooth Criminals #1 will be arrive this November 2018 everywhere at comic book shops, the BOOM! Studios webstore, and popular digital comics app providers.

Magical good times revealed at WIZARD BEACH, a new upcoming comic series

BOOM! Studios recently announced a new comic series, Wizard Beach #1, a five-issue from writer Shaun Simon (The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys) and artist Conor Nolan (Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Giants).

Here’s more from a recent press release:

Wizards exist. As do witches and frost giants and an array of magical creatures. But they were hidden from view until a few found themselves weary of the ice-capped mountains and made their way to the beach. Now wizards are part of the norm, and all they want to do is relax. When Hexley Daggard Ragbottom, a young wizard, wants to put an end to the frost of his homeland, he seeks out his Uncle Salazar, the greatest wizard of all time. But Uncle “Sally” has other plans. Namely napping.

Wizard Beach is about leaving the cold, unrelenting, and dreary life in the mountains for a stress free and relaxing life on the beach. The book doesn’t take itself too seriously, something our main character, Hexley Daggard Ragbottom does when he arrives at the beach,” said Shaun Simon. “With hopes to learn scholarly magic from his uncle, Hex leaves his old life behind. But when the humorless and rigid boy finds his Uncle Salazar lounging on the beach Hex will either learn to let go of his old ways and chill out or live a miserable, high strung life. For me, like the premise of the book, WIZARD BEACH is me letting go of what I thought I should be writing and learning that’s it’s ok to write what I want—to let my guard down and have fun and be funny along the way.”

Wizard Beach asks the question, ‘Where does the magical world go to vacation?’” said Conor Nolan. “The answer lies within our story as we navigate the strange new home of our protagonist, Hexley. The journey will entail copious amounts of ridiculous magic, sun baked high adventure, and possibly a basilisk under the boardwalk. Shaun and I have been building this world for some time, and hope that each issue will be a day at the beach for readers.”

Wizard Beach #1 will magically appear at better comic book stores everywhere and BOOM! friendly digital app storefronts, this December 2018. Visit www.boom-studios.com for more info.
